Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei (Manga) Reminiscence Arc is the manga adaption of the 8th volume of the light novel, Reminiscence Chapter.
This prologue is set three years before the Shiba siblings, Tatsuya and Miyuki, enroll in First High School. When Okinawa is invaded by a mysterious naval task force, Miyuki realizes her turbulent feelings for her brother are far more than sibling affection. This volume of the series reveals the life-changing experiences Tatsuya undergoes–and why his practical magic scores are so poor.
In the wake of a devastating world war, the nations of Earth slowly rebuild and maneuver for power. Magic is now a technology that changes everything, with governments and corporations vying to develop new and ever more powerful magic. Japan is supported by ten major clans, each with their own unique magical heritage. But their magical abilities have come at a terrible price, where magic users must balance their humanity and their loyalties in an unforgiving society of interlocking families.
The Shiba siblings, Tatsuya and Miyuki, are inseparable, where brother protects sister, and a devoted sister tries to make her brother happy. But they were not always so. Three years before, in Okinawa, they meet for the first time, as members of the powerful Yotsuba clan of magic. Miyuki always knew she had a brother, but her meeting with him frightens her. Tatsuya seems cold and remote, more machine than human. Miyuki is told Tatsuya has been trained to be her bodyguard. And everyone in her family seems to hold Tatsuya in contempt. Even their mother refers to her son as "that thing." Miyuki is even more confused when Tatsuya treats her kindly and seems considerate of her feelings. Why doesn't he hate her?
Day after day Miyuki discovers more amazing things about her emotionless brother, his skills in martial arts and his command of magical powers. Yet any attack on his sister triggers a fierce rage in Tatsuya, as if she's more to him than a client to protect. Miyuki's sense of magic whispers that her brother holds even more power, hidden deep inside, waiting to erupt. Chance encounters result in friendships; Tatsuya is held in high esteem by key people outside of their family, hinting at greater things to come.
All this changes when Okinawa is attacked by an unknown navy. Treacherous members of the Japanese Self-Defense Forces take over the naval base command post and slaughter the Yotsuba family and their servants. As Miyuki lays dying, her brother appears—and restores Miyuki to life. What's more, her fatal wounds are gone. Miyuki realizes this is her brother's power, to restore the living from the dead. For this gift of life, Miyuki vows to restore her brother's honor and to defend him from the rest of their family.
But Tatsuya has another power, revealing him to be an unknown strategic-class magician, the hidden weapon of the Yotsuba family. Tatsuya, assisted by his new friend Captain Sakawa, annihilates the invading naval fleet in a single magical operation. Yet their victory is gained through painful sacrifice, and the balance of world powers is threatened by a teenage boy. Miyuki and Tatsuya must now make difficult decisions, and Miyuki prepares to risk everything on her one demand: keep Miyuki and Tatsuya together.
