The chapter introduces the Nine Schools Competition and the reasons for it. Then we see Tatsuya leaving the counseling room and having to explain to Leo, Erika, Mizuki, Shizuku and Honoka that he was summoned because the teachers suspect him of intentionally failing the practical exams. Students generally have similar scores in written and practical exams however Tatsuya is ranked first in the written exam by a large margin. Then they discuss the coming Nine Schools Competition and the difficulty in winning this year due to Ichijou Masaki from the Ten Master Clans participating from Third High School. Watanabe Mari gives a detailed explanation of the Nine Schools Competition when Tatsuya is working at Public Morals Committee HQ. Mari tells how even though the Magicians participating are powerful, victory is not assured due to a lack of CAD engineers. After school Miyuki is going to Kokonoe Yakumo's temple to train for Mirage Bat. The training is interrupted when Tatsuya discovers Ono Haruka hiding in the shadows. Haruka reveals that she is a former disciple of Kokonoe Yakumo as well as a Public Safety Investigator. She is also a Born-Specialized Magician specialized in hiding. Haruka asks that her identity be kept secret and Tatsuya agrees if she keeps him informed about any trouble that may occur in the future.
Tatsuya is playing leg-ball with Class 1-E during PE Class. He notices his teammate Yoshida Mikihiko is much better than his appearance would suggest. Mikihiko is also ranked third in the written exam despite being a Course 2 student. He is also a direct descendant of Yoshida Clan, famed for their expertise in Ancient Magic. Tatsuya suspect Mikihiko is hiding his true abilities. Class 1-E achieves an 8-0 victory over Class 1-F and the game ends. Tatsuya and Leo introduce themselves to Yoshida Mikihiko who asks them to call him Mikihiko because he does not like to be called Yoshida. Mikihiko mentions that he is a childhood friend of Erika's while talking to them. Their conversation is interrupted when Erika and Mizuki arrive. Erika calls Mikihiko 'Miki' which annoys him and when she mentions his dislike in being called Yoshida, Mikihiko becomes agitated and leaves the group. Mikihiko mutters that an accident had happened to him in the past suggesting that his low practical magic ability and reluctance to use his surname are due to the accident. At lunchtime Mayumi, Mari, Suzune, Azusa, Miyuki and Tatsuya are in the Student Council Room discussing the upcoming Nine Schools Competition when Mayumi mentions the lack of CAD Engineers. Azusa who is the best CAD engineer in 2nd Year recommends Tatsuya for the CAD Engineering position as she has witnessed his first class skills in CAD Engineering when he maintains Miyuki's CAD. Mari and Mayumi enthusiastically supports the idea however Tatsuya explains that trust is important in CAD maintenance and unlike Mari and Mayumi, having him as a CAD Engineer would impact negatively on the other student because he is a Course 2 student and a First Year. While Tatsuya is expressing his objections Miyuki suddenly expresses her desire for Tatsuya to maintain her CAD during the Nine Schools Competition. This becomes the final nail in the coffin against Tatsuya and he reluctantly agrees to become a CAD Engineer for the Nine Schools Competition.
Azusa discusses the greatness of the Silver SeriesCADs by Four Leaves Technology and the mystery behind the identity of Taurus Silver. Then she discusses her difficulty in explaining why Flying-Type Magic has not been successfully developed. Mayumi and Suzune give their opinions. When they ask Tatsuya for his thoughts on the matter, he gives a detailed explanation showing a hint of his vast knowledge in CAD Engineering. After-school some students question Tatsuya's ability in CAD Engineering when discussing the participants for Nine Schools Competition. Tatsuya shows his extraordinary abilities by calibrating a CAD for Kirihara Takeaki. Tatsuya is finally named a CAD Engineer for the Nine Schools Competition. At home Tatsuya gets a call from Major Kazama Harunobu. Kazama warns him of the crime syndicate No Head Dragon trying to interfere with the Nine Schools Competition.
The Magic to Fly
Tatsuya invents Flying-Type Magic. Tatsuya and Miyuki goes to the Four Leaves Technology (FLT)'sCAD Development center where Tatsuya is also known as Silver one half of Taurus Silver the other part being Director Ushiyama also known as Taurus. Tatsuya gives the prototype Flight CAD to Director Ushiyama for testing. The new Flying-Type Magic is a resounding success. While leaving FLT Tatsuya and Miyuki meet their father Director General of FLT Shiba Tatsurou and Aoki a servant of the Yotsuba Clan. When Aoki calls Tatsuya a heartless false magician Tatsuya rebuts that it was his mother, Yotsuba Miya, and the current head of the Yotsuba Clan, Yotsuba Maya that conducted the experiment, therefore calling him a heartless false magician is slander against the head of Yotsuba Clan. Tatsuya further explains that the area for strong emotions in his brain was reconfigured into an Artificial Magic Calculation Area thus resulting in a lack of strong emotions within him except for his brotherly love towards Miyuki.
Tatsuya and the other students who will represent First High at the Nine School Competition gets their ID badge during the send-off ceremony.
After the ceremony, Mizuki is outside, waiting for the others to finish their club activity. She notices spirits and goes to investigate. She finds Mikihiko practicing spirit magic. Surprised by Mizuki, Mikihiko instinctively send his spirits to attack, but was stopped by Tatsuya.
The three of them discuss spirit magic, and when Mizuki informs them that she can see the colors of the spirits, Mikihiko claims that she may have "Crystal Eye", and would be pivotal in divine spirit magic. The three agree to keep Mizuki's eye a secret.
On the day of their departure for the competition, the contestants took the bus, while the engineers took separate transports. On the road there, a car suddenly flew toward them.
Multiple students attempts to stop the incoming car, but their simultaneous castings interfere with each other, cancel each other out, and create a Psion storm which makes magic difficult. Miyuki volunteers to stop the flames. As she prepares to cast her magic, the Psion storm suddenly disappears. Juumonji then stops the incoming car. Both are praised, but Miyuki also thanks Suzune for stopping the bus with magic.
After First High students arrive at the hotel they will be staying at, Hattori felt a lack of confidence because Miyuki handled the prior incident better than he did. Kirihara comforted him, noting the siblings were special.
Meanwhile, Tatsuya told Miyuki that the car crash was not an accident, but a suicide attack. In the lobby, they are surprised to find Erika there. Mizuki, Leo, and Mikihiko were also there; Erika told Miyuki that they were able to stay there because of family connections.
As the competitors prepare for the opening ceremony and banquet, Tatsuya is forced to wear a ill-fitting spare uniform with First High's logo embroidered on it.
Erika and Mikihiko are both at the banquet as waiters. Erika notes that the two of them were there due to their families. The other first year students from First High are scared to approach Tatsuya, so he asks Miyuki join them. Masaki takes note of Miyuki and asks his friend, George, about her.
Kudou Retsu, a magician once known as the World's Strongest, uses a low power spell to fool everyone, and then gives a speech. He notes that the use of magic is more important than its power.
That night, after the banquet, the first year girls go to an onsen. Tatsuya and Mikihiko, both outside, notice incoming criminals.
Mikihiko and Tatsuya apprehend the three intruders. Mikihiko is agitated that he wasn't able to do so alone, but Tatsuya tells him that it is mainly his magic's formula that needs work. After Mikihiko leaves, Major Kazama talks to Tatsuya and agrees to deal with the intruders.
On the next day, the Nine School Competition begins in earnest. Mayumi is participating in Speed Shooting, and easily gets a perfect score in the preliminary round. Tatsuya explains to his friend that Mayumi used multi-scope and dry ice bullets.
Mari is participating in Battle Board, and with fortifying magic, and multiple other magics, easily won first place in the preliminary round.
A Star Behind the Scenes
Tatsuya met up with General Kazama and other officers of 101 battalion. They note that the intruders last night were indeed from No Head Dragon. Kazama also warns Tatsuya to not use classified magic if he ever becomes a participant.
In the finals for Speed Shooting, Mayumi managed to win first place using the same strategy with sheer power.
That night, the First High council decides to ask Tatsuya to help with tomorrow's Crowd Ball events. When Miyuki tells Tatsuya this, she notices him working on something. Tatsuya claims that it is simply a toy.
On the day of the Crowd Ball competition, Mayumi asks Tatsuya to help her stretch, and told him that he is like a younger brother. Mayumi won her first match easily by simply rebounding every ball that came into her court. Tatsuya was able to greatly improve the efficiency of her CAD, and Mayumi was easily able to win first place.
Kanon is participating in Pillar Break. In a preliminary round, she defeats her opponent with her magic "Mine Field", and advances to the finals. However, First High was eliminated in the boy's Crowd Ball competition.
The toy that Tatsuya is manufactured by Four Leaves Technology, and sent to him. It is the "mini-communicator", a mace that can extend out a detachable end with magic. Tatsuya has Leo test the weapon out, and notes that it can be used in Monolith Code.
In the finals for Battle Board, the player from Seventh High accelerated incorrectly and crashed into Mari; the latter attempted to mitigate the disaster, but was unable to due to interference.
Mari woke up, injured, and was told that she could not participate in the Mirage Bat competition, and that the interference might have been due to third party actions.
Tatsuya, Miyuki, Kanon, and Kei attempt to analyze the event.
Mikihiko and Mizuiki joins Tatsuya. Tatsuya concludes that there was third party interference on Mari, and believes that Seventh High's player's CAD was tempered with by the Competition Committee.
Afterwards, Miyuki and Tatsuya are called in by Mayumi, and Miyuki is asked to replace Mari in the official division for Mirage bat.
On the first day of the rookie division, Shizuku is participating in speed shooting. Tatsuya is her engineer. Shizuku steps up to the stage.
Rookie Game ~Quick Draw~
Using "Active Air Mine", a magic that Tatsuya developed for her, Shizuku was able to get a perfect score in the preliminaries. In her quarterfinal match, Shizuku uses a general CAD with an aim assist system. With it, she was able to easily win her match. Mayumi, Mari, and Suzune note that an aim assisted general CAD is state-of-art.
Rookie Game ~Battle Board~
Suzune tells Tatsuya that the Magic University wants to officially adopt "Active Air Mine" into its Index. Tatsuya asks that Shizuku's name be placed as its inventor instead of his.
In the Third High conference room, Masaki notes that the First High's engineer for girl's Speed Shooting has monstrous skill, and that any events overseen by him will be a harsh uphill battle.
In the preliminaries for Battle Board, Honoka casts optical magic on the water's surface, blinding the other participants. She is able to win easily with the large lead this tactic gives her.
At night, Miyuki talks to Tatsuya about his refusing to have his name placed in the Index. He notes that he is Miyuki's guardian, and that their aunt would not approve of a guardian coming out of the shadows. He further notes that at the current time, he cannot suppress the whole Yotsuba clan. Miyuki tells him that she will always be his ally.
Rookie Game ~Ice Pillar Break~
The fifth day of the competition arrives. With Tatsuya's CAD maintenance, Eimi easily won her match in Pillar Break.
Shizuku was also participating in Pillar Break. She used data fortification to prevent damage to her pillars, and used Resonance against her opponents. She won easily, losing only one pillar.
Finally, it is Miyuki's match. She completely dominates the match with "Inferno". That night, the first year girls all praise Tatsuya for his engineering skills. Morisaki gets angry and leaves the banquet.
Meanwhile, No Head Dragon, who have been trying to ensure Third High's victory, plans to make their next move.
On the morning of the sixth day, Masaki and George find and talk with Tatsuya. Miyuki believes that they came to declare "war" against Tatsuya's skill.
The tournament committee offers to let Eimi, Shizuku, and Miyuki share first place for Pillar Break, but Shizuku desires to challenge Miyuki.
Rookie Game ~Fairy Game Showdown~
The finals for Pillar Break is fought between Miyuki and Shizuku. Miyuki starts off with Inferno. Shizuku protects her own pillars with Data Fortification, and counter attacks with Resonance Destruction.
Miyuki protects her own pillars, while her Inferno slowly begins to melt Shizuku's. Shizuku, seeing that her tactics is not effective, pulls out a specialized CAD and uses Phonon Maser to damage Miyuki's Pillars.
Though surprised, Miyuki quickly recovers. She casts Nilfheim and covers Shizuku's Pillars with liquid nitrogen. Recasting Inferno, she forced the liquid nitrogen to expand, destroying all of Shizuku's Pillars.
Shizuku was comforted by Honoka after her defeat. The two of them then meet with Tatsuya and Miyuki accidentally and chat over a meal.
The next day, Tatsuya was watched by competitors from other school as he engineers for Mirage Bat. He then thinks about all the connections he made in High School, and notes that they are not easily decomposed.
