Nine Schools Competition XI is the eighteenth episode of the Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei anime.

Summary[]

Tatsuya takes out a branch of the No Head Dragon, as well as gaining information of it's leader. Meanwhile, First High School won the NSC, and a celebratory dance was thrown. After talking with Ichijou Masaki, Tatsuya urged Miyuki to dance with Ichijou, to which she did. Tatsuya was then approached by a few of his female friends to dance. After a while, Tatsuya withdrew from the dance and was approached by Katsuto, where they left the hall and went outside to talk about the prospect of Tatsuya joining one of the Ten Master Clans, even suggesting that he marry Mayumi. Once Katsuto left, Miyuki appeared and asked Tatsuya to dance with her to the final song. They remained outside, dancing next to a fountain.

Plot[]

The evening eleventh of August. Mayumi is holding a small celebration for her teammates to celebrate Miyuki winning Mirage Bar and for First High’s overall win of the Nine School Competition. Erika comments that the next day is the last in the competition to Miyuki, Honoka, Shizuku and Mizuki. Shizuku states Juumonji Katsuto is sure to win Monolith Code the next day. Honoka asks Miyuki where Tatsuya is Miyuki tells them he went to bed as he’s tired. Erika replies that makes sense, given that he’s injured.

Tatsuya meets with Ono Haruka in an underground carpark. In her car Haruka asks Tatsuya if he only needs the map data. Tatsuya asks for the details of the members as well if she has it. Haruka sees the amount she’s been paid and is shocked. When she hesitates, Tatsuya asks if it’s not enough, but she confirms it is and sends the data. As Tatsuya gets out of the car, he thanks her. As he does so Haruka confirms it’s just for insurance, and Tatsuya says it is. After a moment she drives away.

After Haruka leaves, another car comes to life and Tatsuya walks over and gets in. From the driver’s seat, Fujibayashi Kyouko asks who Tatsuya met with and he tells her it was an operative from Public Safety, though she insists she’s really a councillor. Kyouko laughs and affirms it was a part-time operator. Tatsuya assures her there is no issue in talent and says because a novice semi-professional is more likely to work by the book than a jaded veteran, he feels more comfortable asking them to do a side-job. As Tatsuya plugs his terminal into the dashboard to upload the intel, he comments though it’s unethical, money talks. Kyouko comments maybe she should start charging as she starts to drive the car.

Kudou Retsu visits Kazama Harunobu for a private talk. Kazama asks the purpose of the visit and Retsu says he’s interested in Tatsuya, the boy they plucked from the Yotsuba three years earlier, Miya’s son.

Meanwhile Tatsuya and Fujibayashi are driving down the highway.

Retsu states it shouldn’t be a surprise he knows of Tatsuya when both Miya and Maya were Retsu’s former students. Kazama states that if that’s the case, Retsu should be aware the Yotsuba haven’t relinquished their claim on Tatsuya. Retsu asks if Kazama finds that wasteful, explaining that along with Ichijou Masaki, Tatsuya could become a leading asset in Japan’s magical forces, and as such, isn’t it wasteful to have Tatsuya simply be a private bodyguard. Kazama asks Retsu if he wishes to weaken the Yotsuba. Retsu states that the Yotsuba will become too powerful and potentially surpass the Ten Master Clans altogether. Kazama affirms that in terms of combat power, the Yotsuba are head and shoulders ahead of the other families. Retsu states that won’t do as the Yotsuba use magicians as weapons, even themselves and though magicians were originally developed as weapons, if this continues, then magicians will lose their place in the world of mankind. Kazama replies that as Retsu is aware of their situation, he is aware of Retsu’s circumstances to a point as well, to the point he can understand why Retsu is concerned about Tatsuya.

Tatsuya and Kyouko arrive at their destination and approach the building.

Kazuma states Tatsuya is already one of Japan’s most valuable assets and far outclasses Masaki, stating that on point defence, Masaki on his own is an asset with the power of an armoured regiment, but Tatsuya alone is an asset on the level of a strategic missile and as such is magic is restricted by several layers of safeties and it would be cruel to push all the responsibility on him.

In Yokohama, the leaders of No Head Dragon are discussing their options, having not expected Japanese special forces to intervene. One states their top priority should be getting rid of Tatsuya. Another man states they can’t figure out anything from Tatsuya’s background, they couldn’t get at any of his personal data. They wonder who on earth he is.

Meanwhile Tatsuya has used an elevator and is on a roof and takes aim and casts a spell, creating a hole in the wall of the No Head Dragon base and causing one of the Generators to collapse in pain. The five leaders all look over at the hole and see the Generator who fell disintegrate as he stood back up. The men are stunned in shock until the rooms telephone starts ringing. One of them answers and Tatsuya greets them, making it clear he knows who they are. The men ask who is calling and Tatsuya simply thanks them for that day in Fuji and tells them he’s come to return the favour. Tatsuya then disintegrates another of the Generators. Gregory flips the table to create cover as another grabs a rifle and asks one of the two remaining Generators where Tatsuya is. The Generator points at Yokohama Tower. The man tries to take aim at Tatsuya, but he simple smiles and shatters the man’s scope into the man’s eye with magic. Gregory orders the remaining Generators to attack, but they respond that they can’t as they cannot reach Tatsuya. Tatsuya then asks if they really thing he’d let them and disintegrates both remaining Generators. Tatsuya then tells then to try acting themselves instead of using tools. One of the men tries to make a call but Tatsuya answers instead, informing them he’s the only one they can communicate with inside the room, and then disintegrates the man with the phone, telling them the how is irrelevant. The man who tried to snipe Tatsuya tried to run for the door in a panic and is disintegrated.

There is a brief pause in the attack and Douglas Huang tries to negotiate with Tatsuya by saying they won’t interfere with the Nine School Games anymore. Tatsuya simply states they end tomorrow regardless. Douglas offers to withdraw the No Head Dragon from Japan. Tatsuya asks if he has the authority to make such a decision and Douglas states, he’s one of the boss’s advisors. Tatsuya asks if Douglas has met the boss and when Douglas confirms he has, Tatsuya asks for the boss’s name. When Douglas hesitates to answer, so Tatsuya kills James Zhu and asks if Douglas wants to be next. Douglas collapses to his knees and tells Tatsuya the leader of No Head Dragon is Richard Sun, known as Sun Gongming in public. Tatsuya thanks Douglas for his cooperation and when asked affirms he believes what Douglas said. And then kills Gregory. Douglas is the last one alive, and he asks why, when they never went as far as to kill anyone. Tatsuya simply explains he doesn’t care what they did, all that matters is they incurred his wrath which is enough to warrant their deaths. Douglas calls Tatsuya a demon and Tatsuya causally responds that he was able to draw out this demonic power because they drew out his one remaining emotion. Watching on, Kyouko thinks to herself that Tatsuya, built as a weapon, has only one emotion remaining, his feelings for his sister Miyuki. Hearing Tatsuya’s words, Douglas asks if this spell is the one from Okinawa three years earlier, the Demon Right. Tatsuya doesn’t reply and simply kills Douglas as well.

The next day, at the Nine School Games, Katsuto, Takeaki and Hattori are competing in the Monolith Code semi-finals. Hattori is on point and is rushing the opposition while the others defend.

Meanwhile, Tatsuya is being debriefed by Kazama and the offer officers of his unit. Kazuma thanks Tatsuya for his work, but Tatsuya apologises from dragging them into a personal matter. Yanagi Muraji corrects him, as they too were attacked and Sanada Shigeru adds that they also got crucial combat data on long range magical sniping. Kazama adds that both Internal Affairs and Public Safety were happier than expected with the intel Tatsuya acquired so there is no need to worry even if the mission was of a personal nature. Tatsuya asks if the intel was really that valuable. Sanada explains that No Head Dragon are the supplier of Sorcery Boosters, a magical device that has been circulating in the criminal underworld over the last few years. Sanada comments that the things shouldn’t exist and ask Tatsuya knows what their core component is. Tatsuya doesn’t, so Sanada explains it’s made from a human brain. Sanada goes on to say that even though they are an experimental unit meant to embed magicians in the military, they have no intention to use magicians as literal components, so Sorcery Boosters are a thing that shouldn’t exist. Kazama states that emotions aside, the boosters are a threat, something the USNA’s Intelligence Agency agrees with, to the point they were seeking to cooperate with Japan. On the TV, the siren blares signalling the end of the match. Kazama dismisses Tatsuya so he can watch the final from the stands.

Katsuto and Mayumi meet alone to discuss the edict from the clans conference. Mayumi brings up Masaki’s defeat by Tatsuya two days earlier. Mayumi explains that the clans stand at the pinnacle of Japanese magicians and they can’t let Masaki’s defeat undermine that. Katsuto reads between the lines and concludes they want him to flaunt the power of the Ten Master Clans. Mayumi calls it a farce and laments that Tatsuya isn’t from at least a branch family of the clans, as to be spared this third-rate farce. Juumonji tells Mayumi to leave it to him.

Tatsuya is watching the final with Miyuki and are seeing Katsuto use the Phalanx to solo the event while the other two wait by First High’s Monolith. Third High’s players launch spell after spell at Katsuto, but nothing can touch him. When he’s close to them, Katsuto charges at then with a smaller shield and incapacitates all three in moments by ramming them, winning the match. Miyuki comments it was an impressive match. Tatsuya agrees but states that isn’t how you usually use the Phalanx. The real thing should be much more terrifying.

The closing ceremony goes without incident, with all the athletes receiving their medals.

In the evening there is a victory party at the hotel for the competitors. Tatsuya sees Miyuki surrounded by boys when Masaki approaches her. Tatsuya decides to go over and greets Masaki. The other boys quickly take their leave. Tatsuya asks how Masaki’s hearing is and he receives a curt it’s fine but none of Tatsuya’s business, which annoys Miyuki. At this point Masaki realises Miyuki and Tatsuya are siblings and asks for confirmation, much to the amusement of the Shiba siblings. Tatsuya then suggests Miyuki dances with Masaki and the pair head to the dancefloor. As they leave Honoka walks up to Tatsuya and acts embarrassed, looking at the dance floor. After some prompting from Erika, Tatsuya asks Honoka to dance and they head to the dancefloor as well.

There, Tatsuya ends up dancing with Honoka, Shizuku, Eimi and Mayumi one after another. The entire time, Miyuki never takes her eyes off of Tatsuya. When he finally escapes the dancefloor, Tatsuya is approached by Katsuto, who asks to talk.

The pair head outside, where Katsuto asks if Tatsuya is a member of the Ten Master Clans. Tatsuya says he’s not. Katsuto then says, as per the clan meeting and acting as a representative of the Juumonji family, he advises Tatsuya to join the clans. Katsuto then suggests marriage to Mayumi. Tatsuya deflects by saying he’s a normal high school student and such things are far from his mind. Katsuto tells Tatsuya that his defeat of Masaki carries more weight than he realises and as such Tatsuya can’t keep taking it easy. Katsuto then leaves.

Miyuki then walks up to Tatsuya and asks what he and Katsuto spoke about. Miyuki then tells Tatsuya the last song is playing and asks Tatsuya to dance it with her. He agrees and suggests they head back to the hall. Miyuki replies she doesn’t want to waste the time they have together and the pair instead dance by the fountain under to moonlight.
